Emergency units were dispatched around 4:18 a.m. to the 4100 block of East Abner Street, just south of Ascot Hills Park. Crews worked to contain the fire, which affected two apartment units and spread into the attic, bringing it under control in about 34 minutes.
A 34-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman were taken to a hospital with injuries. Meanwhile, crews remained at the scene to secure the building and assess damage.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
We extend our thoughts to those who have been injured and wish them a full recovery.
How Apartment Fires Can Spread Quickly in Multi-Unit Buildings
Residential streets, such as Abner Street, often serve both local access and steady neighborhood traffic. When incidents like fires occur in Los Angeles, response teams work to secure the area while providing assistance to those affected.
Fires in apartment buildings can spread more quickly than in single-family homes due to the shared walls, ceilings, and attic spaces. Once flames reach these interconnected areas, they can spread between units, even if the fire starts in just one section.
An early response plays a crucial role in limiting damage. Quick action to contain flames in shared spaces, such as attics, can help prevent further spread and reduce the number of people affected.
