Fire Risks Linked to Smoking While Using Oxygen
Smoking while using oxygen can create a serious fire risk inside a home. Oxygen does not burn on its own, but it can make nearby materials catch fire faster. Clothing, bedding, furniture, and medical tubing may ignite quickly if a flame or lit cigarette is nearby.
Apartment fires can spread smoke through halls and nearby units, even when flames stay in one room. This can make early warning systems and clear exits very important for residents. People with limited mobility may face added danger because leaving quickly can be harder.
Home oxygen equipment should be kept away from open flames, cigarettes, candles, and heat sources. Safe storage and careful use can lower the risk of a fire starting in a living space.
