San Antonio, TX (August 7, 2026) – A man was hurt after a house fire on the city’s West Side on Wednesday evening, leaving part of the residence with significant damage.
The fire was reported shortly after 5 p.m. at a home in the 2000 block of Delgado St near Northwest 24th St. When emergency units arrived, police officers were already removing the man from the residence. He was taken to a local hospital with first- and second-degree burns as well as possible smoke inhalation.
Fire crews said the flames were limited to a back bedroom and did not spread to the rest of the home, although the residence sustained significant damage. Investigators believe cigarette-smoking materials may have caused the fire, but the exact cause has not been confirmed. The fire remains under investigation as officials work to determine exactly how it began.
Our thoughts are with the injured man as he receives medical care.
How Smoking Materials Can Increase the Risk of Residential Fires
Discarded cigarettes and other smoking materials remain a common source of residential fires. A cigarette that is not fully extinguished can ignite bedding, upholstered furniture, clothing, or other nearby combustible items. Fires that begin in bedrooms or living areas can spread quickly, especially if they go unnoticed during the early stages.
Using sturdy, nonflammable ashtrays and ensuring smoking materials are completely extinguished before disposal can reduce the risk of a fire. Smoke alarms also provide an early warning, giving occupants more time to leave safely. Regularly testing smoke alarms and replacing batteries when needed can improve fire safety and help reduce the likelihood of serious injuries when a residential fire occurs.
