Phoenix, AZ (August 24, 2026) – A 53-year-old man is in extremely critical condition after being hit by a vehicle late on Saturday night, August 22, near 28th Ave and Peoria Ave in north Phoenix. The collision happened at about 11 p.m.

According to the initial report, the man had been arguing with a woman before he ran into the street. Witnesses were chasing him when a vehicle struck him. The driver initially left but returned a few minutes later. Signs of impairment were reportedly noticed when the driver was spoken to. The 53-year-old was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The first collision remained under investigation.

Just before 1:30 a.m., a vehicle reportedly drove past barricades blocking the roadway while the earlier crash was still being investigated. The vehicle continued until it struck another vehicle at Cactus Rd, causing the vehicle to catch fire. The driver was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and impairment was suspected. The investigation into both crashes is still underway, with additional details pending.

Our thoughts are with those hurt and their families during this difficult time.

What Can Happen When Drivers Fail to Stop at Road Closures?

Road closures and barricades are used to keep drivers away from areas where travel may be unsafe. Drivers should slow down, follow posted directions, and stop when barriers prevent access.

Ignoring a closure can place drivers, passengers, emergency personnel, and other road users at greater risk. A driver who continues through a blocked section may encounter stopped vehicles, debris, poor visibility, or unexpected traffic patterns.

Impairment can further affect a driver’s ability to judge distances, recognize hazards, and react quickly. Alcohol or drugs may also reduce coordination and decision-making skills.

When a roadway is closed, drivers should use an alternate route rather than attempting to pass barriers. Following temporary traffic controls can help prevent additional injuries and reduce the chance of another serious wreck.
