How Are Hit-and-Run Fatalities Investigated?
Fatal hit-and-run investigations involve collecting physical evidence and reviewing multiple sources of information to identify the vehicle and driver involved. Investigators examine vehicle debris, paint transfers, tire marks, surveillance footage, traffic camera recordings, and witness statements to help determine the sequence of events and locate the fleeing vehicle.
Investigators also document the position of the pedestrian, roadway conditions, lighting, and vehicle damage while reconstructing the collision. When multiple vehicles are involved, each driver’s actions are carefully reviewed to determine their role in the incident. These findings help investigators develop a more complete understanding of the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
