Richland Center, WI (August 19, 2026) – A 38-year-old Gotham man was severely hurt on Monday after his SUV and a milk truck collided near Richland Airport.

The accident happened around 3:36 p.m. on August 18 at US Hwy 14 and Twin Bluffs Dr. The Ford Escape was traveling on Twin Bluffs Dr and failed to make a complete stop at a stop sign before turning onto the highway.

An eastbound milk truck then struck the SUV, ejecting its driver. The 58-year-old Dodgeville man driving the milk truck was not reported injured.

The SUV driver was taken from Richland Hospital to UW Hospital in Madison by air ambulance because of the severity of his injuries. Before the wreck, dispatch received a report of the Ford Escape traveling on a gravel bike trail between Gotham and Twin Bluffs.

US Hwy 14 remained closed for several hours while the investigation continued. The Wisconsin State Patrol assisted with crash reconstruction and a commercial vehicle inspection. The investigation is still underway, and we hope the injured man makes a strong recovery.

What Happens When a Vehicle Fails to Stop at an Intersection?

A driver who fails to stop at a posted sign can enter a highway without enough time to see approaching traffic. This can create a dangerous crossing path, especially when larger commercial vehicles are traveling through the intersection.

Drivers should come to a complete stop before entering an intersection and check for traffic in both directions. A full stop also provides more time to identify vehicles that may be difficult to see at first.

Commercial trucks generally require more distance to slow or stop because of their size and weight. Drivers entering a highway should allow enough space for approaching trucks and other vehicles to pass safely.

Seat belts can also help protect occupants during sudden vehicle movement. Using proper restraints and following posted traffic controls can reduce the risk of serious harm.
