Why Can Rear-End Crashes With Semi-Trucks Cause Serious Injuries?
Semi-trucks carry far more weight than most passenger vehicles, which can create substantial force during a rear impact. A smaller vehicle may be pushed forward suddenly, exposing occupants to rapid movement inside the cabin.
The neck, back, head, and chest can be affected as the body moves against the seat belt, seat, or other interior surfaces. Vehicle deformation may also increase the risk of trauma in a stronger impact.
Travel speed, following distance, vehicle size, restraint use, and the angle of contact can all influence injury severity. Medical evaluation may help identify strains, fractures, concussions, or internal trauma that is not immediately obvious.
