Why Bicycle and Bus Crashes Can Be Severe
Bicycle crashes involving buses can cause serious injuries because riders have little protection during impact. A bicyclist may be struck directly, knocked to the pavement, or pinned in a dangerous position near the larger vehicle.
Turns can create added risk on busy city streets. A bus driver may be watching traffic, pedestrians, signals, and lane position at the same time. A bicyclist might also be moving through a tight space with limited room to avoid impact.
After a bicycle crash, medical crews often check for head, chest, back, and internal injuries. Critical injuries may require fast hospital care, especially when the crash involves a large vehicle and a high-traffic roadway.
