Why Pedestrian Crashes on Highways Are Often Fatal
Pedestrian crashes on highways are often severe because vehicles move at higher speeds than on local roads. A person walking near travel lanes has little time to react, and drivers may also have limited time to avoid a person in the roadway.
Nighttime conditions can make highway crashes more dangerous. Reduced visibility, glare from headlights, and fast-moving traffic can make it harder for drivers to see someone crossing lanes. A person carrying an object might also move more slowly across the road.
After a fatal highway crash, lanes may stay closed for hours. Crews need space to help victims, inspect the roadway, document vehicle damage, and remove hazards before traffic can safely return.
