Prince George’s Co., MD (May 8, 2026) – Emergency units responded around 7:20 a.m. on Friday, May 8, after a fatal crash involving a school bus at Indian Head Highway and Pine Drive in Prince George’s County.
Officials said the driver of a Mercedes died after the car struck the side of a Prince George’s County school bus. No children were on the bus at the time of the crash.
The school bus was crossing Indian Head Highway when the northbound Mercedes hit it broadside. Sources said investigators believe the Mercedes was traveling at a high rate of speed, and skid marks showed the driver tried to brake before impact.
The school bus driver was taken to the hospital, while a third driver was treated at the scene. The crash involved the school bus and two other vehicles.
The crash remains under investigation; additional details may become available as authorities continue their review.
Our condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the driver who died, and we wish the injured bus driver a full recovery.
Why Broadside Crashes Can Be Especially Severe
Broadside crashes can cause serious damage because the side of a vehicle offers less space to absorb impact than the front or rear. When one vehicle strikes another at an angle or directly on the side, the force can reach the driver or passengers quickly.
Crashes involving buses can also be complex because of their size and weight. A bus might have a higher frame, and a smaller vehicle can suffer major damage when it hits the side of a larger vehicle.
Speed can increase the severity of any collision. It can also reduce the time a driver has to brake or avoid impact. After a high-force crash, people may need medical checks for head, chest, back, and internal injuries.
