Mansfield, OH (March 25, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 71 left one man seriously hurt on Wednesday afternoon, March 25. The incident occurred around 12:32 p.m. near mile marker 163. A 2023 Freightliner box truck driven by a North Royalton man veered onto the right shoulder and struck a parked Toyota RAV4.
The RAV4 was carrying two people. Harold Merz, 73, of Westerville, was extricated from the vehicle and flown by medical helicopter to Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus with serious injuries. His wife, Brenda Merz, 75, also of Westerville, was taken by ambulance to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A passenger in the box truck was also treated at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital for minor injuries. The truck driver sustained only minor injuries and was not hospitalized.
Traffic on I-71 was temporarily halted but has since reopened. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
