Marysville, WA (February 24, 2026) – A serious crash involving a sedan and a school bus left one driver badly injured on Tuesday morning along Interstate 5 in Marysville. Emergency units responded just before 7:30 a.m. on February 24 to the northbound lanes of I-5 just south of SR 529.
Officials reported that these two vehicles were involved in a collision. The driver of the sedan suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital in Everett for treatment. Authorities confirmed that no students were on board the school bus at the time of the crash.
The crash blocked the HOV lane and two general-purpose lanes for several hours. Some lanes reopened around 9:45 a.m., and the roadway was fully cleared and reopened by approximately 10:50 a.m. Authorities have not released the identity of the injured driver.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
How Highway Crashes Can Lead to Extended Lane Closures
Highway crashes often cause lane closures due to vehicle damage and debris. When serious injuries occur, emergency crews must secure the area and provide medical care before vehicles can be moved. This process can take time, especially on busy interstates.
Larger vehicles, such as school buses, may increase cleanup time due to their size and weight. Specialized equipment is sometimes needed to safely move damaged vehicles. Crews also check the roadway for fluids or debris that could pose risks to other drivers.
Traffic flow can remain affected even after some lanes reopen. Full reopening usually occurs once all hazards have been removed and the roadway is safe for normal travel.
