Why Multi-Vehicle Highway Crashes Often Cause Major Traffic Disruptions
Crashes involving several vehicles can quickly block large sections of a highway. Damaged cars may block multiple lanes, preventing other drivers from passing.
Highway traffic typically moves faster than city street traffic. When a crash occurs, drivers approaching the scene may suddenly slow down or stop, which can increase congestion.
Emergency crews also require space to assist injured people, assess vehicle damage, and clear debris from the roadway. This often requires temporary lane closures to protect both responders and passing drivers.
Eleven vehicles are removed, and the roadway is cleared. Traffic usually returns to normal, although delays can persist for some time as congestion gradually clears.
