Why Rural Road Crashes Can Be Especially Severe
Crashes on rural or less congested roadways can sometimes lead to more severe outcomes. Vehicles may travel faster on these roads than on busy city streets.
Many rural routes also have limited shoulders, ditches, or embankments near the roadway. When a vehicle leaves the road during a collision, it may strike uneven ground or fixed objects along the roadside.
Two-vehicle crashes can also occur when drivers attempt to pass, turn, or adjust position on narrow roads. Limited lighting or roadway curves may reduce visibility, especially in the evening.
Because of these conditions, collisions on rural roads can result in significant vehicle damage and a greater risk of serious injuries or fatalities.
