Why Are Urban Intersections Common Locations for Serious Crashes?
Busy intersections in urban areas often see a high volume of vehicles traveling in different directions at the same time. Turning movements, traffic signals, and congestion can increase the chances of collisions when drivers misjudge spacing or timing.
Investigators commonly review traffic patterns, signal timing, and vehicle positions to determine how intersection crashes occur. Speed, visibility, and driver attention are also factors that may contribute to serious injuries. In heavily traveled areas, crashes can quickly affect surrounding traffic and require extended emergency response efforts.
