Why Stop-Sign Intersections Can Lead to Serious Collisions
Crashes at stop-sign intersections often happen when a driver fails to fully stop or misjudges the speed of oncoming traffic. Even brief lapses in attention can lead to side-impact collisions, which are among the most common types of intersection crashes.
These types of impacts are especially dangerous because the side of a vehicle offers less protection compared to the front or rear. Investigators often review stop-sign compliance, vehicle speed, sight lines, and roadway markings to determine how the collision occurred. Weather, road design, and driver visibility can also play a role in intersection crashes, particularly in rural or semi-rural areas where traffic controls may be less prominent.
