Why Stop Sign Intersections Can Become High-Risk Crash Areas
Rural intersections controlled by stop signs can become dangerous when drivers fail to slow down or fully stop before crossing traffic lanes. Many of these roads have higher speed limits, which can reduce reaction time for approaching drivers and increase the force of impact during a collision.
Crashes at intersections often involve side-impact damage, especially when one vehicle enters the roadway unexpectedly. Pickup trucks and larger vehicles may also carry a greater risk of rollover or ejection if seatbelts are not used. Safety restraints help reduce the chance of occupants being thrown from a vehicle during a violent crash.
Road visibility, driver attention, and traffic speed are often reviewed after intersection accidents. Weather conditions, roadway markings, and vehicle damage can also help provide additional context about how a collision occurred.
