Miami, FL (January 8, 2026) – Two City of Miami Police motorcycle officers were hospitalized Wednesday morning following a crash along the westbound lanes of the Dolphin Expressway (SR-836), roughly half a mile west of Le Jeune Rd. The incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. and initially sparked a search for a possible hit-and-run driver, which has since been ruled out.
According to Miami Police, the crash happened as four motormen were escorting a funeral procession westbound on the expressway. Initial reports suggested that a black SUV had cut off two of the officers near NW 47th Ave, causing them to become entangled and crash. However, after further review of traffic video, officials confirmed the crash did not involve any civilian vehicle.
Department spokesperson Mike Vega stated that the officers were attempting to prevent a civilian driver from entering the funeral procession when the collision occurred. As they maneuvered to instruct the driver, the two officers lost control and crashed. There is no longer a search underway for any SUV or outside driver.
Both officers were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where they were treated for injuries to their arms, shoulders, back, and legs. Police Chief Manny Morales said the injuries are not life-threatening and both officers were expected to be released by Wednesday night or Thursday.
“It’s definitely not the way we wanted to start the year, but I’m thankful that they’re both in good spirits,” said Chief Morales. “Just a reminder of how dangerous the job is. These folks go out there each and every day and try to keep the streets of Miami safe.”
The crash prompted a temporary shutdown of three westbound lanes between Le Jeune Rd and Red Rd as Florida Highway Patrol, Miami Police, and Road Rangers responded to the scene. The lanes have since been reopened.
We send our sincere wishes for a swift and complete recovery to both injured officers.
