Romeoville, IL (January 8, 2026) – A fatal crash shut down the northbound lanes of I-55 early Thursday morning after a vehicle went airborne from Frontage Rd and landed on the interstate in Romeoville.
According to Romeoville police, the crash occurred around 4:20 a.m. when a car traveling at high speed westbound on Frontage Rd failed to navigate a curve. The vehicle launched through a barrier and landed onto I-55, where it was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
The driver of the airborne vehicle died at the scene. The driver of the second car sustained non-life-threatening injuries. A third vehicle was also involved in the incident, but authorities have not confirmed whether additional injuries occurred.
Dramatic video from the crash site shows a large gap in the roadside barrier, marking the point where the vehicle exited Frontage Rd. Emergency crews and investigators remain on scene, and both I-55 and portions of Frontage Rd are expected to remain closed for several hours for investigation and cleanup.
Police have advised that traffic is being rerouted at Route 30 and are urging drivers to seek alternate routes to avoid long delays.
