Jacksonville, FL (August 25, 2026) – A 39-year-old Miami man died Tuesday morning after his box truck crashed into the back of a semi tractor-trailer stopped on the shoulder of northbound I-95 near State Road 9B, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The crash happened around 5:35 a.m.

The box truck’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi’s driver, a 23-year-old Petersburg, Virginia man, was treated for minor injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing. Our condolences go out to the box truck driver’s family and loved ones.

Why Are Rear-End Crashes Into Stopped Shoulder Vehicles Fatal?

A vehicle stopped on the shoulder is essentially stationary, while an approaching vehicle may still be traveling at highway speed, creating a significant difference in relative speed at the moment of contact. This gap means the full force of that speed difference gets absorbed almost entirely by the moving vehicle.

Early morning hours can make it harder for a driver to notice a stopped vehicle in time, since reduced ambient light and possible fatigue both narrow the window to react. A driver who’s momentarily distracted or nodding off has even less chance of stopping before reaching a stationary obstacle ahead.

Investigators typically examine following distance, lighting, and vehicle speed to understand why a driver didn’t see or couldn’t stop for a stopped vehicle in time. This kind of review helps establish the full circumstances behind a crash like this one, particularly involving a larger commercial vehicle.
