Why Early Morning Bicycle Crashes Can Be Especially Severe
Crashes involving bicyclists and motor vehicles can be more severe when they occur at night. Visibility is often reduced, making it harder for drivers to see cyclists and react in time.
Speed differences between vehicles and bicycles can also increase the severity of impact. Without the protection of a vehicle frame, bicyclists are more likely to sustain serious injuries in collisions.
Investigators typically review lighting conditions, roadway design, and traffic flow at the time of the crash. These details help determine how the incident unfolded and whether visibility or timing played a role.
