Frequently Asked Questions
Can a crash trigger additional collisions after the first impact?
Yes. Vehicles that stop or spin out in travel lanes can be struck again by oncoming or following traffic, especially in low light or on rural roads, so drivers approaching a crash scene should slow down well before reaching it.
Why are crashes involving several vehicles usually harder to investigate?
Investigators have to sort out the sequence of impacts, the speed and position of each vehicle, and how multiple drivers responded in the seconds before the collision, which usually takes longer than a single-vehicle crash reconstruction.
What typically leads to multi-vehicle crashes like this one?
Common factors include one vehicle crossing into another's path at an intersection, reduced visibility, and driver error, though the specific cause in any case is determined only after investigators review the evidence.
