Monroe, MI (April 7, 2026) – Two people were injured early on Monday morning, April 6, in a crash on Interstate 75 in Monroe County, including one in critical condition.
The crash occurred around 5:00 a.m. when a 39-year-old Detroit man stopped his vehicle for unknown reasons while traveling northbound. A 49-year-old Toledo man driving a semitrailer struck the smaller vehicle from behind, causing it to leave the freeway. The impact also caused the semitrailer to jackknife and collide with the median guardrail.
The Detroit man was transported to a hospital in critical condition, while the semitrailer driver was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Emergency units at the scene included the Berlin Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, Michigan State Police, and the Michigan Department of Transportation. Authorities continue to investigate the crash, and more details will be released as they become available.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Rear-End and Jackknife Crashes Are Particularly Dangerous
Collisions involving stopped vehicles and large trucks can be especially hazardous. Semitrailers carry significant momentum, and striking a smaller vehicle can cause severe damage and injuries.
Jackknife incidents occur when a trailer swings out and forms an angle with the tractor, potentially causing the truck to strike barriers or leave its lane. High speeds, sudden stops, and limited reaction time make these crashes more likely to cause critical injuries.
Emergency responders prioritize stabilizing victims, securing the scene, and preventing secondary crashes while providing immediate medical attention to those injured.
