Why Vehicles Sometimes Leave the Roadway on Rural Routes
Single-vehicle crashes on rural roads can occur for several reasons. These roadways often have higher speed limits and fewer traffic controls compared to city streets.
Curves, narrow shoulders, and roadside obstacles such as culverts, trees, and drainage ditches may increase the risk of serious damage if a vehicle leaves the pavement. Even a small steering correction at higher speeds can cause a vehicle to drift off the roadway.
Surface conditions can also affect vehicle control. Gravel along the edge of the road or uneven pavement may reduce tire traction, making it harder for drivers to regain control once a vehicle moves off the travel lane.
Because of these factors, vehicles that leave rural roadways may strike nearby structures or overturn, which can lead to severe outcomes.
