Vernon, CT (August 6, 2026) – A man in his late 50s was injured in a moped collision on Interstate 84 East just before Exit 66 in Vernon late on Wednesday, August 5.

The crash was reported at approximately 9:40 p.m. Initial information indicated the rider was operating a moped with a reported top speed of 35 mph when a car allegedly cut him off, causing him to fall onto the roadway. Witnesses said the rider remained conscious and alert after the wreck.

The man suffered generalized road rash and was taken by advanced life support ambulance to Hartford Hospital. The initial report also stated that the rider was believed to be heavily intoxicated. No additional information about the other vehicle or its driver was released.

The circumstances surrounding the collision continue to be examined as the investigation remains active.

We are wishing the injured rider a full and steady recovery.

Why Moped Crashes on Highways Can Be Especially Dangerous

Moped crashes on high-speed roadways can result in serious injuries because these vehicles are smaller, travel at lower speeds, and provide little protection for riders. Differences in vehicle speed can increase the risk of conflicts with surrounding traffic.

Safety reviews usually examine vehicle movements, witness statements, roadway conditions, and any available video to better understand how a collision occurred. Investigators may also consider visibility, traffic flow, and other contributing factors identified during the review.

Moped riders can improve safety by using routes where their vehicles are permitted, wearing protective gear, and remaining visible to other motorists. Drivers can also help reduce risks by checking carefully before changing lanes or merging.
