What Risks Do Motorcyclists Face on Busy Urban Freeways?
Motorcyclists face unique dangers when traveling on heavily used freeways, especially in areas with high traffic volumes and frequent lane changes. Because motorcycles are smaller than passenger vehicles, they can be harder for drivers to see, particularly during merging or lane-shifting maneuvers.
Freeway crashes involving motorcycles can also create additional hazards when riders or bikes come to rest in active travel lanes. Even a minor traffic disruption can increase the risk of secondary collisions if approaching motorists do not have enough time to react. Factors such as speed, traffic density, roadway design, and visibility conditions are often reviewed after these types of crashes. Safety experts generally encourage drivers to check blind spots carefully and maintain adequate following distances to help reduce the likelihood of motorcycle-related roadway incidents.
