Amarillo, TX (July 28, 2026) – A motorcyclist died, and two other people were injured after the motorcycle failed to yield to oncoming traffic and struck a car on the I-40 Frontage Road near Arnot Road, according to Texas DPS. The motorcycle had been traveling westbound at the time.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity had not been released as of this report. Two people in the car were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The eastbound I-40 entrance ramp from Arnot Road was closed following the wreck. We hope both injured passengers have a full recovery.

Why Do Failure-to-Yield Crashes Happen on Frontage Roads?

Frontage roads run parallel to a highway but intersect with entrance and exit ramps, creating merge points where drivers must judge oncoming traffic carefully before proceeding. A vehicle failing to yield at one of these points can end up directly in the path of traffic it didn’t see or didn’t account for in time.

Motorcycles add an extra layer of risk in these situations, since their smaller profile can make them harder for other drivers to spot, and a rider has less protection if a collision does occur. Judging the speed of an approaching vehicle can also be more difficult from a motorcycle’s lower vantage point.

Investigators typically look at sightlines, signage, and each vehicle’s speed to understand why a driver failed to yield at a specific location. This kind of review can help identify whether a particular intersection or ramp poses a recurring hazard for drivers passing through.
