Fort Worth, TX (July 29, 2026) – A group of off-duty Wise County first responders, returning from SWAT training, helped free people trapped in a multi-vehicle wreck Monday, July 27, on U.S. Highway 287, according to Fort Worth police. One car became pinned between a truck and a concrete barrier.
Using limited gear, including a door-breaching tool and a saw, the responders freed at least one trapped person. Several others were taken to hospitals with injuries. No fatalities were reported.
The responders were members of Wise County EMS, the Wise County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wise County Fire Marshal’s Office. The cause remains under investigation, and it’s unclear whether any charges will be filed. We hope everyone involved has a full recovery.

A door-breaching tool or saw meant for another purpose can still prove useful in freeing someone trapped, even if it isn’t the specialized rescue equipment a fire department would typically bring.
Coordination with arriving on-duty crews is usually seamless in these situations, since off-duty responders generally understand triage and safety procedures well enough to hand off care smoothly once official help arrives. This kind of overlap can shave crucial time off a rescue in the minutes before dedicated crews reach the scene.
