What Can Cause a Motorcycle to Leave the Roadway?
Single-vehicle motorcycle crashes often occur when a rider loses control and departs from the travel lane. A variety of factors can contribute to these crashes, including roadway curves, changing surface conditions, debris, weather, mechanical issues, or rider input.
Unlike larger vehicles, motorcycles rely heavily on balance and traction. Small changes in steering, braking, or road conditions can have a greater effect on stability. When a motorcycle leaves the pavement, uneven ground, ditches, or roadside obstacles can increase the likelihood of an overturn.
Investigators reviewing these crashes commonly examine tire marks, vehicle damage, roadway geometry, and environmental conditions. Understanding why a motorcycle left the roadway is often key to determining how the sequence of events unfolded and whether any external factors played a role.
