Why Left-Turn Motorcycle Crashes Often Result in Severe Injuries
Left-turn collisions involving motorcycles are among the most serious types of roadway crashes. These incidents always occur when a vehicle turns across the path of an oncoming motorcycle, leaving little time for either party to avoid contact.
Motorcycles are more vulnerable in these situations because riders lack the protective structure found in enclosed vehicles. As a result, even moderate-speed impacts can lead to significant injuries, particularly to the lower extremities.
Investigators typically review vehicle speeds, sight distance, intersection layout, and driver awareness when examining these crashes. They also consider whether traffic conditions or timing contributed to the driver’s ability to judge the motorcycle’s approach.
