How Swerving Maneuvers Can Lead to Head-On Collisions
Swerving to avoid a vehicle or obstacle can sometimes create new hazards, especially on two-way roads. When a vehicle crosses into an opposing lane, even briefly, it increases the risk of a direct collision with oncoming traffic.
Vehicles carrying heavy loads, such as gravel trucks, may have different handling characteristics compared to standard passenger vehicles. Load weight can affect braking distance, stability, and the ability to return safely to the original lane after a sudden maneuver.
Investigators often look at factors such as traffic flow, spacing between vehicles, road design, and driver reaction time when analyzing these types of crashes. Small changes in steering or speed can quickly escalate into serious collisions when opposing lanes are occupied.
