Warrens, WI (May 28, 2026) – A 68-year-old Beloit man died following a rear-end crash on Interstate 94 near Warrens late Monday night. The Wisconsin State Patrol identified the victim as Duane Zaugg.
Zaugg was driving his GMC Sierra westbound when a Kia Optima struck it from behind: they were identified as Lacey Georgeson, 21, of Warrens.
The force of the hit pushed both vehicles off the interstate, each one rolled over multiple times before coming to rest. However, unfortunately, Zaugg was not wearing a seatbelt at the time. He died as a result of the wreck.
Georgeson was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Alcohol was a factor in the crash, according to the State Patrol.
The investigation into the collision is continuing as further details are gathered. Our deepest condolences go out to Duane Zaugg’s family and all those who loved him.
What Factors Are Typically Reviewed in Fatal Rear-End Crashes on Wisconsin Interstates?
Fatal rear-end crashes on interstates often involve a combination of factors that investigators work to piece together after the fact. Speed, following distance, and driver impairment are among the first things reviewed when a high-speed collision results in death. In Wisconsin, alcohol involvement is documented and can affect how a case is handled legally. Seatbelt use is also examined closely, as it frequently influences the severity of injuries in rollover accidents. When a vehicle leaves the roadway and rolls, the risk of fatal injury increases significantly for unrestrained occupants. Roadway conditions, lighting, and visibility at the time of the crash may also be considered as part of a complete review.
