Belton, TX (May 28, 2026) – A nine-vehicle crash shut down part of the northbound Interstate 35 in Belton on Wednesday, May 27. The pileup happened near the Interstate 14 merge at about 1:40 p.m., according to police.
Early reports stated that seven vehicles were involved, but Texas DPS later confirmed that nine vehicles were part of the chain-reaction collision. One person was reported hurt and received treatment for minor injuries. Traffic delays continued while emergency units worked to clear the highway and reopen lanes.
Crews are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the crash. We are thinking of the person injured and wish them a smooth recovery.
Why Multi-Vehicle Crashes Often Lead to Major Highway Delays
Crashes involving several vehicles can quickly block multiple lanes and create long traffic backups, especially on busy interstate highways. Drivers traveling at high speeds may have little time to stop once traffic ahead slows suddenly, increasing the likelihood that additional vehicles become involved.
Heavy congestion near highway merges and interchanges can also raise the risk of chain-reaction crashes. When lanes narrow or traffic patterns shift, drivers may brake abruptly or change lanes without enough space. Wet pavement, distracted driving, and following too closely are other factors commonly reviewed after these types of roadway collisions. Even when injuries are minor, clearing damaged vehicles and debris from a major highway can take significant time and disrupt traffic flow for hours.
