Leesburg, FL (May 28, 2026) – Two people were hospitalized early Thursday morning after multiple semi-trucks were involved in a crash on Florida’s Turnpike in Leesburg.
The accident happened around 4:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike, just before the U.S. Highway 27 exit in Lake County. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, one semi-truck was on the shoulder and was attempting to merge into the outside lane.
Troopers said that semi-truck moved into the path of another semi-truck, and the two vehicles collided. Two additional semi-trucks then struck debris from the crash.
Two people were taken to a hospital, including one person with serious injuries. Two right southbound lanes were blocked for several hours while crews worked to clear the area, but drivers were able to pass in the left lane.
The roadway has since reopened. The crash remains under investigation. We hope those injured receive the care and support needed during recovery.
Why Semi-Truck Crashes Can Cause Long Road Closures
Semi-truck crashes can take hours to clear because the vehicles are large, heavy, and often require specialized towing equipment. When debris spreads across travel lanes, crews must remove it carefully so other drivers do not strike damaged parts or lose control.
Crashes involving several trucks can also create multiple impact points. Medical teams may check for head, neck, back, chest, and limb injuries after a heavy collision. Investigators may review lane position, merging movement, shoulder use, traffic speed, debris fields, and vehicle damage to understand how the crash developed and why lanes stayed blocked for several hours.
