What Makes Vehicle and Buggy Crashes So Dangerous in Kentucky?
Horse-drawn buggies are a regular part of life on rural roads in parts of Kentucky, particularly in areas with large Amish and Mennonite communities. These vehicles travel much slower than cars and sit low to the ground, making them harder to see, especially in low-light conditions or around curves. The size difference between a buggy and a motor vehicle means the outcome of a collision is often severe.
Kentucky’s rural highways frequently mix motor traffic with non-motorized vehicles, which creates a unique set of challenges for drivers. Roads like U.S. 31-W pass through farming communities where buggies may appear at any time of day. Slowing down and staying alert in these areas can make a significant difference in preventing serious crashes.
