What Risks Are Present for Pedestrians on Busy Highway Corridors?
Routes carrying steady traffic like U.S. Highway 61 can present challenges for pedestrians, especially in areas near retail centers. After a serious crash in Natchez, crews often focus on maintaining safety around high-traffic zones.
Highways are typically designed for faster-moving vehicles, which can reduce reaction time when a person is on or near the roadway. At night, visibility may be lower, making it harder for drivers to see pedestrians in time to stop.
Factors such as lighting, traffic speed, and crossing locations can all affect pedestrian safety. Areas near businesses may draw foot traffic, increasing the chances of interactions between vehicles and people on foot.
