This is an update to an earlier story that happened on Sunday, March 15.
Northfield Township, MI (March 17, 2026) – This is an update to a previously reported crash involving a rollover on US-23 in Northfield Township. Officials clarified that the vehicle involved was a box truck, not a semitrailer, and confirmed that additional emergency units responded to the scene.
The crash happened around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, on the southbound lanes near Barker Road. The box truck rolled over, causing all southbound lanes to shut down. Two men inside the truck were taken to a hospital, one in critical condition and the other in stable condition.
Debris from the crash also struck a vehicle traveling in the northbound lanes. That driver was not taken to the hospital. Officials said the truck was carrying items for a moving company, and no hazardous materials were involved.
The box portion of the truck was heavily damaged, and crews spent several hours clearing the roadway and transferring its contents. The freeway reopened around 10:30 p.m.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they are provided.
Our thoughts are with those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Box Truck Rollovers Can Lead to Extended Highway Closures
Box trucks carry cargo that can shift during travel, especially if it is not evenly balanced. When a truck loses stability, it may tip or roll, particularly at highway speeds or during sudden maneuvers.
After a rollover, the contents of the truck can spill across multiple lanes, creating hazards for other drivers. Cleanup often takes longer because crews must remove both the vehicle and the cargo before reopening the roadway.
Investigators usually examine load distribution, road conditions, and driver actions to determine how the rollover occurred. These factors help explain why the vehicle lost control.
