OAKLAND, Alameda County, Calif., Oct. 17, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash on southbound I-880 near High Street sent at least one person to a hospital on Friday morning, October 16.
The California Highway Patrol's traffic log shows initial reports of a crash involving three or four vehicles just before 6:30 a.m. near the southbound High Street off-ramp. A silver Ford Escape, a black sedan, and a white postal box truck were named in early reports. One caller told dispatchers a semi-truck had struck their vehicle, though that account had not been independently confirmed.
Fire crews responded and requested an ambulance for at least one person. A separate vehicle involved in the incident was also checked out by fire personnel at the scene. Within about an hour and a half, a second report came in describing two vehicles involved in a crash with no injuries, logged separately from the original incident.
A tow truck was called to remove at least one vehicle, a black Mazda Miata, from the freeway. Dispatch notes indicate one party was transported from the scene and that the vehicle involved would be stored rather than returned to the roadway. The California Highway Patrol and the Freeway Service Patrol both closed out their incident logs by midmorning.
The extent of injuries has not been released, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
We hope everyone who was hurt makes a full and speedy recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can drivers avoid getting caught in a pile-up on the freeway?
Keep enough space between your car and the one ahead, watch brake lights several cars up, and be ready to slow down well before reaching a slowdown or stopped traffic.
What should I do if I come across a crash on the highway?
Slow down early, turn on hazard lights if you need to stop, and move as far from traffic lanes as possible. Call 911 if emergency crews aren't already on scene.
How does fog or low visibility make multi-vehicle crashes more likely?
Reduced visibility cuts down the time drivers have to react to slowing or stopped traffic ahead, which can turn a single fender-bender into a chain-reaction crash involving several vehicles.
Why does following distance matter so much on the freeway?
A longer following distance gives a driver more time to brake smoothly instead of swerving or slamming on the brakes, which lowers the chance of being struck from behind or rear-ending another car.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Oakland, CA
If you're involved in a multi-vehicle crash on the freeway, try to move to the shoulder if your car is drivable and it's safe to do so. Turn on your hazard lights and stay inside your vehicle if traffic is still moving nearby. Check yourself and any passengers for injuries, and call 911 even if the damage looks minor, since some injuries don't show symptoms right away. Exchange information with other drivers only once everyone is safely out of traffic lanes. Get checked by a medical provider as soon as you can, and keep records of any paperwork, photos, or reports from the scene in case you need them later.
