RICHMOND, Contra Costa County, Calif., Oct. 17, 2026 — Three vehicles, including two big rigs, collided early on Friday morning, October 16, on westbound I-580 near Stenmark Drive in Richmond, according to the California Highway Patrol. An ambulance was requested for injuries.
The crash was reported shortly after midnight and initially blocked both westbound lanes, the CHP said. Dispatch logs describe a semi truck pulling a refrigerated box trailer colliding with a silver Hyundai sedan, with a second big rig also involved. One semi was reported still drivable after the crash.
The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert around 12:41 a.m. after the crash blocked lanes 2 and 3 on westbound I-580, warning drivers to expect delays. Richmond Fire personnel responded to the scene. A tow truck was called to remove the damaged Hyundai, which had front-end damage, and another tow was arranged for one of the big rigs, with a negotiated hold until 6 a.m.
By around 12:51 a.m., the CHP reported all lanes reopened after wreckage was moved to the shoulder near Stenmark Drive, and the SigAlert was canceled. The extent of injuries has not been released. The California Highway Patrol said it is reviewing traffic camera footage of the collision as part of its investigation, which remains ongoing.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do chain-reaction crashes happen?
They usually start when one vehicle stops or slows suddenly and the vehicles behind it can't react in time, especially in heavy freeway traffic or low-visibility conditions overnight.
How can drivers avoid getting caught in a pile-up?
Keeping a safe following distance, reducing speed in the dark or in reduced visibility, and watching brake lights several cars ahead can give drivers more time to react.
What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on the highway?
Turn on hazard lights, stay in the vehicle if it's not safe to exit, and move as far from traffic lanes as possible. If you can safely reach the shoulder, do so and wait for emergency crews.
