Why Median Crossovers Can Lead to Severe Highway Crashes
Crashes involving vehicles crossing a median can be especially dangerous because they often result in high-speed impacts. Medians are designed to separate opposing traffic, but when a vehicle crosses that barrier, drivers traveling the other direction may have little time to react.
Loss of control, sudden steering movements, or roadway conditions can cause a vehicle to leave its lane and cross the center divider. Once a vehicle enters oncoming traffic, collisions can occur quickly due to the combined speeds of the two vehicles.
Striking roadside objects such as poles or barriers can also increase the severity of a crash. These fixed objects do not move during impact, which can result in significant vehicle damage and serious injuries to occupants.
