How Hit-and-Run Crashes Involving Pedestrians Can Occur
Pedestrian crashes can sometimes involve more than one vehicle, particularly on busy roads. If a person is struck and falls into the roadway, approaching drivers may have little time to react.
Traffic conditions, visibility, and vehicle speed can affect how quickly a driver recognizes a hazard ahead. When drivers are unable to stop in time, additional impacts may occur.
These situations often happen during early morning or nighttime hours when lighting conditions are reduced. Limited visibility can make it harder for drivers to see a pedestrian or an earlier crash in the roadway.
Vehicle descriptions and roadway evidence often help investigators piece together what happened. Even small details, such as vehicle color or body style, may help identify the vehicles involved.
