Killeen, TX (July 16, 2026) – One man was critically injured in a duplex fire on Wednesday evening, July 15, in the 2200 block of Spicewood Drive in Killeen.

According to the City of Killeen, the Bell County Communications Center received multiple 911 calls at approximately 5:56 p.m. reporting a structure fire with possible occupants trapped inside. A General Alarm response brought 32 emergency personnel to the scene.

The first fire unit arrived within five minutes and found heavy smoke coming from the duplex. Firefighters immediately began an interior fire attack while conducting operations.

One man was rescued from the residence and transported by Killeen Fire Department EMS to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in critical condition. A cat was also found deceased inside the home.

The fire was brought under control about 20 minutes after the first unit arrived. Firefighters remained at the scene to extinguish hot spots and assist with the investigation.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire. We hope the injured man makes a full recovery.

How Crews Divide Responsibilities During a Structure Fire

Structure fires involving possible trapped occupants require firefighters to perform several critical tasks at the same time. While some crews attack the fire, others search the building for anyone inside, provide emergency medical care, and work to keep the flames from spreading to nearby areas.

Heavy smoke, intense heat, and the possibility of structural damage can make rescue efforts especially challenging. Fire departments often dispatch additional personnel and equipment to enable multiple operations to be carried out safely and efficiently.

Fire investigators typically examine burn patterns, electrical systems, appliances, witness statements, and other physical evidence to determine how a fire started. These findings help explain the sequence of events and may provide valuable information for preventing similar incidents in the future.
