How Can Deer-Related Crashes Lead to Serious Secondary Collisions?
Crashes involving deer can become especially dangerous when drivers lose control while attempting to avoid an animal or after making contact with one. Sudden steering movements, braking, or vehicle damage may cause a vehicle to leave its lane or enter opposing traffic.
Wildlife-related roadway hazards are most common during early morning and evening hours when visibility is reduced and animal activity tends to increase. Deer can appear unexpectedly, giving drivers only a short amount of time to react. On rural highways, higher travel speeds may further reduce the margin for avoiding a dangerous situation.
When a vehicle crosses into oncoming traffic after striking an animal, the risk of severe injuries rises significantly. Reviews of these crashes focus on vehicle movement, roadway conditions, visibility, and physical evidence to better understand the sequence of events and identify factors that contributed to the collision.
