What Risks Do Pedestrians Face at Busy Boulevard Intersections?
Wide, multi-lane boulevards present real hazards for people on foot, even at marked intersections. Vehicles traveling at higher speeds have less time to stop, and drivers may not expect pedestrians to be crossing, particularly during morning hours when visibility can be affected by sun glare or low light.
Intersections where a major boulevard meets a side street can also create confusion about right of way. Pedestrians crossing multiple lanes must account for vehicles in each lane independently, since a driver in one lane stopping does not guarantee others will do the same. In busy commercial corridors, the combination of turning vehicles, through traffic, and pedestrian crossings creates a layered set of hazards that makes crossing safely more complicated than it may appear.
