What Makes Left-Turn Crashes with Motorcycles So Dangerous?
Left-turn crashes are among the most common and deadly types of collisions involving motorcycles. They typically happen when a driver turning left fails to see an oncoming motorcycle, or misjudges how fast it is approaching.
Motorcycles are narrower than most vehicles, which can make them harder to spot, especially in low-light conditions like early morning. When a motorcycle strikes the side of a turning vehicle, the rider absorbs most of the force directly, with little surrounding structure to provide protection.
Helmets and riding gear offer some defense, but they cannot fully offset the severity of a broadside hit at speed. These crashes tend to be fatal for motorcyclists at a much higher rate than other collision types, which is why intersection behavior and driver awareness matter so much on busy roads.
