Why Vehicles May Leave the Road Before Striking Fixed Objects
Cars can leave the roadway for many reasons, especially at night or along roads with curves and limited lighting. Drivers may lose control after overcorrecting, traveling too fast for conditions, or attempting to avoid another vehicle or obstacle. Wet pavement, loose gravel, and reduced visibility can also make steering more difficult.
Guardrails are designed to reduce the risk of more severe harm by redirecting vehicles away from dangerous spots. Even so, some vehicles can still pass through or around barriers depending on speed and angle. Trees are among the most common fixed objects involved in serious roadside impacts.
Medical crews often evaluate people involved in these cases for head trauma, chest injuries, and possible internal bleeding, even if symptoms are not immediately obvious after the vehicle comes to a stop.
