Why Left-Turn Motorcycle Collisions Often Cause Serious Injuries
Collisions involving motorcycles and turning vehicles are among the most severe roadway incidents due to the limited physical protection available to riders. When a vehicle turns left across oncoming traffic, drivers must quickly judge the speed and distance of approaching motorcycles, which can be more difficult to see than larger vehicles.
Even at moderate speeds, the force of a direct impact can result in significant injuries. Road design, traffic flow, and visibility at intersections often play a role in how these crashes occur. Investigators frequently review signal timing, driver sight lines, and vehicle positions to understand how a failure to yield may have developed in the moments leading up to the collision.
