Why Occupant Ejection Increases the Risk of Severe Injuries
Vehicle rollovers can be particularly dangerous because occupants may be subjected to multiple impacts as a vehicle overturns. When a person is ejected from a vehicle, the likelihood of serious or fatal injuries increases significantly.
During a rollover, occupants who remain properly restrained are generally better protected by the vehicle’s safety systems, including seat belts and structural components. Those who are ejected may be exposed to direct contact with the roadway, surrounding terrain, or the vehicle itself.
Investigators reviewing rollover crashes often examine vehicle damage, roadway conditions, and occupant positions to better understand how the sequence unfolded. These factors can help determine what contributed to the rollover and why injuries varied among the people involved.
