What Happens When a Vehicle Crosses the Center Line?
Crossing the center line is one of the more dangerous roadway situations because it places vehicles directly into opposing traffic. On two-lane highways, drivers often have little time to react when another vehicle enters their lane. As a result, these crashes can lead to severe injuries or fatalities due to the combined force of vehicles traveling in opposite directions.
Several factors may contribute to a vehicle crossing the center line. Driver fatigue, distraction, impairment, medical emergencies, and poor visibility are among the circumstances that are commonly reviewed after such crashes. Roadway design and weather conditions may also be examined to determine whether they played any part.
When a center-line crossing occurs, investigators often review vehicle damage, witness statements, roadway markings, and other physical evidence. These findings can help establish how the collision happened and provide a clearer understanding of the sequence of events.
