Kochville Twp, MI (June 16, 2026) – A baby died after a three-vehicle collision at the intersection of Pierce Road and Lawndale Road in Kochville Township on Sunday evening.
The collision happened at about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 14. Investigators said a maroon Buick Encore traveling west on Pierce Road went through a stop sign and was struck on the passenger side by a southbound black Chevrolet pickup truck. The two vehicles then struck a white Ford pickup truck that was stopped nearby.
The baby, about 6 months old, was riding in the back seat of the Buick and was pronounced dead at the scene. The baby was in a child safety seat that may not have been installed correctly, according to deputies.
A 26-year-old woman, the baby’s mother, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Two other Buick passengers were also hospitalized. The pickup truck drivers reported minor injuries but declined additional treatment.
Investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the accident. Our condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the child who lost their life.
How Do Child Safety Seats Help Protect Young Passengers?
Child safety seats are designed to reduce the risk of serious harm during a traffic collision by keeping young passengers properly positioned and secured. Proper installation and choosing a seat that matches a child’s age, size, and weight are key parts of safe use.
Common issues with child seats can include loose attachments, incorrect positioning, or using a seat that is not suited for the child. Many safety organizations recommend regularly checking installation instructions and replacing seats that have been involved in a major crash. Rear seating positions are generally considered safer for young passengers because they provide additional distance from front-end impacts. Careful use of child restraints can help provide better protection for children traveling in vehicles.
